Fundamentals of Bulk Power System Operations

This course introduces the basics of bulk power system operations, using the Ontario system to illustrate the concepts. It is particularly suited to those who are new to the industry, such as recently hired graduates, who will gain a solid appreciation of how the overall system operates. It is well suited to both technical and non-technical audiences and would also benefit professionals in the marketing, finance, legal and others areas of the industry.

The course is designed to explain how the bulk power system operates on a day-to-day basis and then shows how a commercial electricity market is superimposed on this.

Participants are introduced to the North American interconnected grid and how an individual power system is operated within this grid. All of the main components of the system are introduced and discussed., viz. customer loads, the different types of generation and their characteristics, and basic transmission and distribution, as well as daily scheduling and dispatch by the system operator. Finally the operation of an ISO type electricity market is explained.

About the Instructor


Brian McConville has a degree in Electrical Engineering and over 35 years of experience in power system operations. He was a protection and control engineer for Ontario Hydro before moving to the power system operations area and later worked as a consultant at Eskom’s electricity control centre in Johannesburg. Brian was a manager in Ontario Power Generation’s trading function and also managed the operational compliance function following the opening of the Ontario electricity market. He has had firsthand experience in moving from the regulated to the deregulated market.
